Network Analysis of 38.000 Historical Letters

CORE Admin

LAB1100 has analysed and visualised a dataset of over 38.000 letters of nineteenth century intellectuals, using nodegoat.

The Study Platform on Interlocking Nationalisms (SPIN) at the University of Amsterdam has created this dataset using manual data entry processes as well semi-automated imports (geo-referencing and disambiguating people was largely done by hand).

The visualisation shown above is a combination of multiple personal epistolary networks in a single social graph. Read more about the process of creating this graph on the nodegoat blog. There you will also learn more about the geographical visualisation that can be created with this dataset:

Explore the metadata of all these historical letters in the epistolary section of the Encyclopedia of Romantic Nationalism in Europe: ernie.uva.nl.
